Training
Training has been cited as one of the most important responsibilities of any law enforcement agency. Training serves three broad purposes: first, well-trained officers are generally better prepared to act decisively and correctly in a broad spectrum of situations; second, training results in better productivity and effectiveness; and third, it fosters cooperation and unity of purpose.
The Lebanon Police Department recognizes the importance of training and is committed to providing the best training available to all personnel. All officers are required to attend the Police Academy for basic training, which is currently ten weeks long. After basic training officers are then required to complete department policy and procedure training for one week followed by a minimum of six weeks in the field training program. After all basic police training is complete the officer is then trained in basic fire fighting, first aid, and CPR, and AED utilization.
Upon completion of the above training the officer is promoted to a public safety officer who is able to provide general police services along with basic fire fighting and first aid services. Training however does not stop there. Public Safety officers are required annually to complete 40 hours of police in-service, 36 hours of fire school and 10 hours of first aid and CPR, which includes AED training. Specialized training is provided in addition to the above to further enhance the abilities of officers. Criminal justice classes at Cumberland University are also available to officers.
