City of Lebanon, Tennessee Recreations Department Facilities

The mission of the Harold Dean Greer Recreation Center is to provide programming for the public targeting identified leisure pursuits, which may include sports, athletics, and other leisure activities. It also provides a safe, indoor environment for the general public. The gym at the recreation center is the location of our boys and girls Jr. Pro Basketball league, which runs from November to February each year. The gym is also open to other groups such as the Lebanon High School Basketball and Baseball teams, Map Academy, Lebanon High School Special Education students, and other local groups for coaching clinics. Our main offices are located at the Harold Dean Greer Center where people can get information on our programs, rent a pavilion at the Don Fox Community Park, or register for a sport. The Recreation Center also has a couple of conference rooms where meetings can be held. Occasionally, these rooms can be converted into offices for special community projects. Currently, one of our offices is being utilized by a group that is conducting a census for the City of Lebanon. Also, in the winter, our local Big Brothers organization uses the recreation center to put together food boxes for people in the community. The goal of the Harold Dean Greer Recreation Center is to provide safe and efficient leisure activity for the residents of Lebanon and to make accommodations for the general public as needed.

The Buddy Maddox tennis courts are open to the public year round to allow people the opportunity to learn and participate in the game of tennis. In the spring the courts are utilized by the Lebanon Tennis team and Cumberland University Tennis team. In the summer, the City of Lebanon Recreation Department sponsors the Betty Rushing Tennis Clinic, which is a six-week program that teaches children ages 7-12 the fundamentals of the sport of tennis. Also in the summer, the tennis coach from Friendship Christian School and the tennis coach from Cumberland University have a couple of week-long tennis clinics at the Buddy Maddox tennis courts for children at all levels of play. The goal of these programs is to teach children the sport of tennis so that they can enjoy it for a lifetime as a fun leisure time activity.

The Recreation Department also provides the care and maintenance for the two softball fields at Elkins Park, next to the Driver License Testing Center. These fields are generally used by our Church Softball league that is made up of about six local churches. They also serve as extra practice fields for some of our local softball teams.

The Recreation Department is also responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of our newest baseball field, Veterans' Field. This complex has a stadium that holds about 500 people. Veterans' Field is "The Home of The Lebanon Blue Devils." It is also usedby the Cumberland Bulldogs baseball team. Various local, district, and state tournaments are hosted at this field.

The Recreation Department is also responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the City of Lebanon's three soccer fields that are off of Castle Heights Avenue, next to the Lebanon Airport. The Lebanon Youth Soccer Association is responsible for scheduling practices and games, registration, and puchasing uniforms, equipment, insurance, and officials. The league is open to children 4-18 years of age. The league has both a spring season and a fall season. There are currently about 700 children that participate in this league.
