Welcome to the City of Lebanon Sanitation Department.

The following is general information regarding our sanitation department, including some of the most frequently asked questions. For additional information, refer to the City's Charter Title 17 Refuse & Trash Disposal

We currently have 14 employees (six class B CDL Drivers, seven Ground Workers And one Supervisor). Our schedule is four/10- hour days, Tuesday thru Friday. Mondays are set aside for maintenance on trucks. Our truck fleet consists of six- 25-yard transport trucks and two- nine yard satellite trucks. Two of our transport trucks are 1998 models; these two trucks have exceeded their life expectancy, and will have to be replaced soon. One of our satellite trucks is a 1994 model, that we have pieced together for several years and is basically a back up Unit.

sanitationWe pick up approximately 8,200 residential carts per week and approximately 550 Small business. We produce 8,000 tons of Garbage per year. This is delivered to the Middle Point Landfill in Rutherford County (Walter Hill) at an annual cost of approximately $180,000. Approximately $8,000.00 of this cost goes to the State Of Tennessee in the form of a Disposal Tax, $1.20 per ton goes to Rutherford County in the form of a Host Fee.

We are experiencing an 18-20% increase in the number of customers we issue carts to (Over 450 new homes per year). There is an information sheet delivered with each cart. We have 95 gallon carts that we issue to new residents and for replacement. We issue one cart of the customer's choosing to each residence or small business upon request. In the event the small business has access to a commercial dumpster, they are not eligible for our service. In the event that one cart is not sufficient, the customer can purchase a second cart at our last purchase price. At the current time this is $ 75.00

We have Rules and Guidelines for our residential service. All small business customers must abide by our residential policies. We have a limit of four (4) carts per location, whether it is apartment houses, shopping centers, churches, etc. The customers are asked to keep their own carts clean. We will make any kind of wear and tear repairs that may be needed. We also provide for our new residents a one-time moving boxes pickup service. Upon request, if a new residence has broken down boxes we will provide this service. That Pickup day may not be necessarily the same day as garbage pickup.

Holiday Scheduling: The Sanitation Department works every Holiday except Thanksgiving Day, New Years Day and Christmas Day. Thanksgiving Day is on Thursday each year. Thursday Customers are picked up on Friday, and Friday Customers are picked up on Saturday. The day of the week for Christmas varies each year. Watch your newspaper for Christmas schedules or Call: 444-0825 ext 121. In the event that we have inclement weather (that only lasts one) day, your pickup will be moved to the following Day.

Some of the most frequently asked questions and comments about Lebanon’s Sanitation service:

1. My cart is dirty; can I have a new one?
The Supervisor will make an inspection of the cart, and make a determination as to what needs to be done (replace, repair, etc).

2. I am moving to another location inside the City Limits, can I take my cart with me?
No. The carts are assigned to addresses not individuals.

3. Someone has stolen my cart or my neighbor has run over my cart.
In these cases, we ask that a Police Report be filed. If we do not find the stolen cart within a couple of days, we do issue another cart, or replace the damaged ones.

4. Can I put my Grass Clippings and small pile of Limbs in the Cart?
No. The carts are for household waste only. One of the most frequent problems we have is people discarding animal waste or hazardous materials in the carts such as: Batteries, Used Motor Oil, Paints. These situations are Code Violations and are turned over to our Codes Department.

5. I had my Cart at the curb and they did not pick it up.
We find that in a large percentage of these cases the cart was not out when the truck came by. We do go back, depending on the available time to do so. In some cases a customer may have to wait until the next scheduled pick-up date.
